US raises fentanyl and scam-crime concerns with China, senior official says
The State Department official said the US urged Beijing to show it is not helping alleged Chinese crime bosses evade international accountability.
The US has pressed China at the highest levels over transnational criminal organizations behind Southeast Asia’s online scam industry and over fentanyl trafficking, according to a senior State Department official.
Michael DeSombre, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that US President Donald Trump raised these concerns directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping during discussions on Washington’s response to global scam operations.
DeSombre said Washington has encouraged China to demonstrate it is not abetting the crimes by allowing alleged Chinese crime bosses to be held accountable internationally.
The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment, SCMP Economy said.
