China outlines robot-dog plan to patrol lunar research stations

China’s space researchers have outlined a concept for a lunar research mission that uses autonomous robots, including robot dogs, to patrol and support crews near future Chinese lunar facilities. The plan envisions three astronauts working alongside intelligent machines, with one astronaut directing two robot dogs as they move across the lunar surface, while others collect rock samples and perform scientific tasks.

According to researchers from the China Academy of Space Technology, which is described as the nation’s leading spacecraft developer, a third crew member would operate from a van-sized pressurized rover that coordinates the mission and controls other robots when needed.

The concept, published in the journal Chinese Space Science and Technology, says future lunar exploration would rely on astronaut-led decision-making supported by autonomous robots. It also describes robots taking on routine responsibilities such as daily patrols and inspections, managing environmental regulation tasks like air and temperature controls, cleaning living spaces, tending plants, preparing meals, and potentially providing conversation and companionship to help with the psychological strain of isolation.
