Hong Kong charity deploys AI chatbot to help migrant workers
The Migrasia team embeds its PoBot assistant in platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to handle high inquiry volumes and collect data on exploitation patterns.
A 17-member Hong Kong charity, Migrasia, has turned to artificial intelligence to scale pro bono support for migrant workers facing exploitation, according to SCMP Economy.
Migrasia co-founder David Bishop said the charity built PoBot as a centralized, call center-style chatbot to deliver instant help while also gathering information that can reveal patterns of abuse tied to global labour migration.
Bishop described labour migration as a crisis amplified by ageing populations across major economies, arguing that demand for assistance has outpaced traditional ways of responding to inquiries.
To improve access, the group integrated PoBot directly into chat applications migrant workers already use, including Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, and uses the data it collects to monitor trends and alert governments to emerging issues.
