Iran says Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until US meets demands
Iran listed six conditions for reopening, including sanctions relief and compensation for war damages, while shipping through Hormuz fell to 33 vessels from Monday through Thursday.
Iran has rejected expectations of an imminent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the waterway will remain closed until the United States meets Tehran’s six demands, according to a statement carried by OilPrice.
The demands include ending U.S. threats and any military action, a permanent end to the war, withdrawal of U.S. naval and air forces from around Iran, compensation for war damages, sanctions relief, and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
OilPrice notes the stance suggests Tehran does not view the often discussed U.S.-Iran draft agreement as sufficient to reopen Hormuz, and it says any agreement would require approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
The article also points to continued disruption in shipping, with only 33 vessels transiting Hormuz from Monday through Thursday, down from 50 in the same period the prior week, and with just six crude tankers reportedly clearing the strait outbound so far this week.
