Spain to introduce border checks on travelers from Italy until Sept. 7

The checks will verify travelers identities and, for third-country nationals, visa or residence status, after Spain said Italy would not lift its own checks tied to the Ceuta migration crisis.

Spain will introduce border checks on travelers arriving from Italy starting at midnight Saturday, and the measures will run until September 7, according to Spanish state broadcaster RTVE, citing a decree from the Madrid government.

The checks are intended to verify travelers identities and nationality, and for third-country nationals to confirm visa or residence permits, the reporting said.

The move follows Italy’s rejection of a Spanish ultimatum to lift border checks that were ordered after the mass influx of migrants into Spain’s North African exclave of Ceuta.

Spain had threatened countermeasures if Italy did not reverse its own checks, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicating she would not comply with any ultimatum.
