Typhoon Dolphin cancels flights between Hong Kong, Japan and China
A typhoon-related disruption also hit travel costs, with one operator estimating losses of 500,000 to 1 million yen.
Typhoon Dolphin has disrupted air travel across East Asia, with at least 12 flights connecting Hong Kong with mainland China, Taiwan and Japan cancelled as the storm moved away from Okinawa and toward eastern China, the SCMP Economy reports.
Hong Kong International Airport data showed eight outbound cancellations on Saturday, including routes to Okinawa and Ishigaki in Japan and to Shanghai on the mainland, with additional cancelled flights scheduled for Zhoushan and Ningbo in China and Taipei in Taiwan. SCMP Economy also noted arrivals were affected, with one flight each from Zhoushan, Taipei, Ishigaki and Okinawa cancelled.
Travel changes extended beyond cancellations, as HK Express, Cathay Pacific Airways’ budget carrier, cancelled one flight between Hong Kong and Ningbo on Saturday and another on Sunday, and rescheduled a further flight to Monday because of the storm.
Cathay Pacific said it would waive rebooking, re-routing and refund charges for eligible travellers booked on flights to or from several mainland cities, including Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai and Wenzhou, as well as Taipei in Taiwan. The article also cites an accommodation and car rental operator in Okinawa estimating the typhoon cost his business between 500,000 and 1 million yen.
