CUHK president urges more funding to expand Northern Metropolis campuses
CUHK is pushing for support to develop a proposed 300-hectare university town near Hong Kong’s border with mainland China, citing limited campus size as a ranking constraint.
The president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, has called for greater financial backing to help build out campuses in the Northern Metropolis university town near the border with mainland China, in an effort to expand the university’s footprint and capacity, according to the South China Morning Post.
Lo said Hong Kong universities face a key weakness in their small scale, arguing that institutions in the city resemble boutique hotels because their campuses are relatively limited in size, while larger mainland universities have had the benefit of multiple campuses.
He also linked the proposed expansion to global university rankings, saying some ranking agencies constrain results based on institutional size, and described the Northern Metropolis as a way to address Hong Kong’s land constraints.
The plan centers on a 300-hectare, 741-acre university town designed to give local institutions an opportunity to grow and increase their impact.
