UAE says Iran targeted ADNOC tanker as Hormuz blockade persists

The UAE said Iran targeted an ADNOC vessel with a missile while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and ADNOC says 15 of its ships have been attacked since the start of the war.

Iran has imposed an effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and is seeking to charge users for passage, the United Arab Emirates said, citing a new incident involving a tanker belonging to state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). According to the UAE foreign ministry, Iran targeted the ADNOC vessel with a missile while it was transiting the strait, and the statement said no casualties were reported.

The UAE said it is discussing arrangements for the future management of the Strait of Hormuz with nearby Oman, as Iranian officials continue talks that appear to be nearing completion. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Oman talks are approaching the final stages, while cautioning that this is not a sign of reopening the strait.

ADNOC, meanwhile, said that since the start of the war, 15 of its vessels have been attacked in Hormuz, including three vessels in the week alone, according to a company statement cited by the report. The Strait of Hormuz carried around a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas before US and Israeli strikes in February helped trigger a wider regional war, the article notes.
