Netanyahu rejects US-led Gaza plan endorsed by Hamas
Netanyahu said Israel will not withdraw in Gaza until Hamas is genuinely disarmed, and Israel will continue to thwart threats to its forces and citizens.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a US-led Gaza plan endorsed by Hamas, creating further distance with President Donald Trump as Netanyahu seeks support ahead of upcoming elections, according to Agence France-Presse via SCMP Economy.
Netanyahu opposed a 15-point document Hamas agreed to in late July, and said Israel rejects the proposal. Speaking to a cabinet meeting, he also stated that Israel will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed, adding that the military will continue to thwart threats against Israeli forces and citizens.
Netanyahu acknowledged that the White House had called the deal a milestone for peace, but he signaled Israel is willing to challenge the US position. He said Israel is raising objections with the United States, noting that some US-linked ideas are acceptable and others are not, and that Israel knows how to stand its ground on these matters.
The remarks followed more than a week of escalating criticism of the plan from Netanyahu’s right-wing allies, despite receiving assurances that Israel would not need to begin withdrawing immediately.
