Wind additions forecast dips as turbine and solar technology evolves
Wood Mackenzie expects global wind additions of 160 GW in 2026, down 6.0% from 2025, with the U.S. set to add 46 GW of new wind capacity from 2025 to 2029.
Energy companies are working on more durable and efficient renewable power equipment, including wind turbines and solar panels, aiming to support a faster global green transition, OilPrice reports.
An analysis by Wood Mackenzie, cited by OilPrice, projects global wind energy additions will total 160 GW in 2026, a 6.0% decline from 2025’s record 170 GW.
The research consultancy attributes the expected drop in part to China completing a five-year development cycle, while the United States is expected to add 46 GW of new wind capacity between 2025 and 2029.
OilPrice also notes that Trump administration policies that hinder wind energy development could weigh on the U.S. wind sector, even as wind turbine technology advances over the past decade.
