Russia and Ukraine trade overnight strikes that kill civilians
The attacks included drones that killed five people in Belgorod and missile strikes in Kharkiv that killed two residents, regional authorities said.
Russia and Ukraine exchanged overnight strikes that killed civilians and left many others injured, local authorities reported. The fighting continued amid a backdrop of heavy Russian missile use on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks.
According to the Belgorod regional administration, Ukrainian drones killed five people and injured two dozen others, including a four-year-old boy, in the Russian border region. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, Russian missiles struck a block of flats in the Saltivskyi district, killing two people and injuring 13, regional head Oleh Syniehubov said.
The local administration in Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa said eight more people were injured after “dozens of missiles and drones” struck the city and surrounding region. The Associated Press reported that Zelensky has for months lobbied for more US-made Patriot air defence systems as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of interceptors.
SCMP Economy also noted that Zelensky has sought alternatives if more Patriot systems cannot be delivered, including making Patriot ammunition in Ukraine or seeking approval to use Elon Musk’s Starlink for guiding strikes deeper inside Russia.
