Trump signals Iran pressure could be more economic than military
The Strait of Hormuz has been blocked since the war began, sending fuel prices higher and adding pressure on the administration ahead of the November midterms.
US President Donald Trump signalled on Sunday that the US is prepared to let economic pressure mount against Iran, describing a shift away from ordering additional military strikes as Tehran presses tough demands for a deal.
According to SCMP Economy, Trump’s comments, conveyed to Axios in a brief phone call, came as Iran has delayed an agreement to open up the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran has demanded the US end its blockade of Iranian ports and lift oil sanctions first.
SCMP Economy reports that the Strait of Hormuz blockade since the February 28 war with Israel has helped drive fuel prices up and rattled the world economy, increasing pressure on the Trump administration with November midterm elections approaching.
Trump also said the US is “only semi-negotiating” with Iran, and he added that oil prices are falling, which he said means American consumers are feeling less pain from the conflict.
