72.7% of Hong Kong professionals use AI weekly, survey finds
HKUST’s survey of 3,722 workers in Hong Kong found generative AI usage is widespread, with 81.7% of respondents using tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini for work tasks.
A survey conducted by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology found that 72.7% of working professionals in Hong Kong use artificial intelligence tools at work on a daily or weekly basis, more than double a global average of 31% cited in a 2025 KPMG study, according to SCMP Economy.
The HKUST study, which polled 3,722 professionals between March and April, also found that generative AI tools were the most widely adopted, with 81.7% of respondents using platforms such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini to draft documents, summarize information, and support creative work.
Despite broad adoption, the survey pointed to a skills gap in usage depth. Only about a quarter of respondents said they regularly used more advanced AI applications, including data analytics tools, image or video generation, or agentic systems designed to carry out multi step tasks with limited human oversight.
Perceptions also differed by job level. While about 70% of senior managers said AI increased their motivation to learn new skills, more than half of junior employees worried AI could erode the value of their existing skills, and about 40% said it made them feel less secure in their jobs.
