Chinese study says microbubbles plus ultrasound shrank aggressive liver tumors
Researchers in Guangdong and Huzhou reported that patients given ultrasound and microbubbles in addition to standard therapy had smaller tumor growth than those on standard treatment alone.
Chinese researchers say a technique combining ultrasound with injected microbubbles safely shrank advanced tumors from an aggressive form of liver cancer, according to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports on July 19, as covered by SCMP Economy.
The microbubbles, described as tiny gas-filled particles typically a few micrometres in diameter, were originally designed as contrast agents in ultrasound imaging but have been explored for therapeutic use.
In the study, investigators from the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University and Huzhou Central Hospital compared cancer patients receiving standard therapy with another group that also received experimental ultrasound and microbubble treatment.
The researchers found tumors in the second group grew smaller than in the standard-therapy group, and they said the approach could support localized treatment options for cancer patients.
