Hong Kong court hears jeweller procurement worker stole HK$11.1m in gems
The High Court said the theft involved 2,557 carats of diamonds taken from suppliers over six years by manipulating consignment records.
A former procurement manager at Hong Kong jeweller Tse Sui Luen Jewellery has pleaded guilty to theft involving diamonds worth more than HK$11 million, with prosecutors saying the scheme ran for about six years and was tied to the defendant’s gambling addiction, according to SCMP Economy.
The High Court heard that Mui Ka-fai, 63, obtained small diamonds from the company’s regular suppliers and resold them once or twice a month for profit between 2017 and 2023. The case included three counts of theft, SCMP Economy reported.
Investigators found he was involved in the theft of 2,557 carats of diamonds valued at HK$11.1 million. Mui was the only employee responsible for procuring small diamonds from different suppliers after joining the company in 1988.
SCMP Economy said the suppliers’ agreement required inspection and examination diamonds to be returned upon request, with each exchange recorded on consignment forms that Mui entered into the jeweller’s computer system.
