Iran replaces top Supreme National Security Council security official
The change followed Aug. 9 tough demands from the outgoing security chief, including calls to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and unfreeze Iranian assets.
OilPrice reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei replaced Mohammad Baqer Zolqard as his representative on the Supreme National Security Council, appointing veteran commander Mohsen Rezaei as the new secretary.
The outlet says the appointment came after days of speculation in Iranian media over whether Zolqard had submitted his resignation, with rumors tying it to President Masud Pezeshkian, who formally chairs the SNSC.
OilPrice notes that while the president chairs the council on paper, the secretary is described as having greater day to day operational influence in shaping the SNSC’s actions.
In its coverage of Zolqard’s final statement on Aug. 9, OilPrice says he issued demands directed at the United States, including calls to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, never threaten Iran again, fully compensate Tehran for damages from the war, and unfreeze Iranian assets unconditionally.
