Anthropic-backed data center platform Theseus Infrastructure launched

The planned U.S. hyperscaler projects will be built with capital from Macquarie and GIC, while Anthropic will cover excess electricity costs, and power demand risks have been flagged by PJM.

Macquarie Asset Management and GIC are partnering with Anthropic to create Theseus Infrastructure, a new platform intended to build, operate, and lease Anthropic-anchored data center infrastructure, primarily in the United States, according to Bisnow. Funds managed by Macquarie and GIC will provide construction capital for purpose-built projects for Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI model.

Anthropic will cover excess electricity costs associated with new hyperscaler data centers, aligning with a prior pledge, the outlet reported. Bisnow added that the announcement said planned developments would support thousands of construction jobs, though it did not specify new project rollouts.

The deal comes as computing power and large electricity loads have become key constraints for AI data center growth, Bisnow said. The outlet pointed to warnings from PJM, the operator of the country’s largest energy grid, which has warned that electric bills could rise by as much as 60% over the next five years and cautioned that power spikes could lead to temporary grid shutoffs for data centers to avoid cutting service to local residents.

Bisnow also noted that PJM’s footprint includes 13 states from Ohio to Virginia, including Loudoun County, Virginia, an area long associated with data center development. It cited Anthropic’s February commitment to offset increased energy costs from its operations, and referenced similar commitments from other AI competitors after they were drawn into White House talks in March.
