Puerto Rico power outages not tied to major events rose 19% in 2025

The EIA said Puerto Rican customers averaged 36 hours of outages from non-major events in 2025, up from 2024.

The US Energy Information Administration said the average duration of power outages in Puerto Rico that were not caused by major events such as hurricanes increased 19% in 2025.

In 2025, customers in Puerto Rico experienced an average of 36 hours of power interruptions from these non-major causes, compared with the prior year.

The EIA also noted that, on average, Puerto Rican customers saw 29 hours of power loss each year over the 2021 to 2025 period.

For context, the EIA said electricity customers in the mainland United States generally experience about two hours of electricity interruption.
