US says it will deepen Indo-Pacific commitment while urging more burden-sharing
A senior Pentagon official said deterrence in the region will rely on a posture of deterrence by denial along the first island chain.
The United States is not planning to disengage from Asia, instead “digging in” to help maintain a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific while pressing partners to take on more responsibility for their own defense, a senior Pentagon official said Monday, according to SCMP Economy.
Elbridge Colby, Undersecretary of Defence for Policy, said America will not reduce its role in the region, framing the approach as “partnership, not dependency,” and spoke at a think tank event in Manila.
Colby said maintaining that balance of power requires what he described as a posture of deterrence by denial along the first island chain, and he pointed to a growing US military commitment in the region.
His comments were delivered as part of a Southeast Asia trip, with the Philippines described as his first stop, followed by visits to Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia.
