Baptist University reviews IT security after alleged ransomware breach
About 1,900 credentials tied to the university may have been compromised, including roughly 130 staff accounts and 1,770 other user accounts.
Baptist University in Hong Kong said it is reviewing the security of its information technology systems after a ransomware group claimed it had illegally accessed the school’s data online, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reported that cybersecurity monitoring platforms indicated about 1,900 credentials linked to the university may have been compromised, including roughly 130 staff accounts, about 1,770 other user accounts, and 260 third party employee credentials.
SCMP Economy said the allegations were made by “The Gentlemen,” an advanced cybercrime group that emerged in the middle of last year, and researchers describe it as using a revenue sharing model that rents extortion software to other hackers.
In a statement released Tuesday night, the university said it had noted a webpage alleging an unlawful breach and is closely reviewing the security of its systems and personal data.
