Bitcoin’s BIP-110 fork stalls after chain split leaves it far behind

The BIP-110 breakaway chain has produced only two blocks since Saturday, sitting 326 blocks behind BTC and estimated to take more than six years to reach the next difficulty adjustment.

A proposed Bitcoin rule change known as BIP-110 triggered a chain split on Saturday, but the breakaway network has not continued progressing, according to CoinDesk.

CoinDesk reports that the forked chain has produced just two blocks since splitting off, remaining stuck at block 961,633 while the main Bitcoin network reached block 961,959, a gap of 326 blocks.

The report says the fork inherited Bitcoin’s high mining difficulty despite having no market value for its coins, leaving miners with limited incentive to support it.

CoinDesk adds that the fork cannot lower its mining difficulty until it reaches 2,016 blocks, a milestone now estimated to be more than six years away, though some observers caution it may be too early to judge the effort as a failure.
