Brics summit in September targets diplomacy on Strait of Hormuz crisis
The September 12 to 13 forum is expected to leverage Brics economic clout, roughly 40% of global GDP, as energy markets remain strained by the Middle East conflict.
A Brics summit scheduled for September 12 to 13 is expected to give India and China a platform to coordinate diplomacy aimed at resolving the Strait of Hormuz crisis, as the United States has made limited progress, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet cited analysts who said the meeting will take place amid a global energy crisis linked to the Middle East conflict, with Brics’ broader influence seen as potentially enabling parallel discussions among member states.
SCMP Economy also reported that analysts described a possible convergence of interests between India and China, even if their geopolitical positions differ. One political-science professor at India’s Ashoka University said China is closer to Russia and Iran than India is, while India maintains strategic partnerships with the US, Europe, Israel, the UAE, and Ukraine.
The analysis added that Brazil, described as a major voice and bridge for the Global South, could help smooth internal divides within the 11-member grouping.
