Former Deloitte IT manager remanded over theft of 423 laptops
Authorities said the laptop theft was discovered after a shortfall of 399 devices was found at Deloitte’s Hong Kong office in February 2023.
A former Deloitte IT manager, Ho Man-kit, was remanded in custody pending sentence after pleading guilty to theft tied to stealing 423 laptops from the firm’s Hong Kong office, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet said Ho misappropriated Lenovo computers worth HK$1.2 million, then sold them to an electronics recycler between September 2021 and February 2023, and he told authorities that he later lost the illegal proceeds through unsuccessful stock trading and remained in debt.
SCMP Economy reported that the scheme surfaced on February 13, 2023, after an IT engineer discovered a shortfall of 399 laptops at Deloitte’s Cityplaza office in Quarry Bay.
The outlet added that surveillance footage showed Ho attempting to sell a box of 15 laptops to a recycler while he was supposedly on leave, and that he later confessed to a supervisor two days afterward and surrendered to police the same afternoon.
