Jellyfish clog pumps, forcing shutdown of 3 reactors in France

EDF said the outages followed Monday closures of three reactors, with a fourth unit’s output cut by half, leaving one reactor at full capacity.

A nuclear plant in northern France shut down three reactors after a swarm of jellyfish clogged pumps used to cool the units, EDF said, according to SCMP Economy citing an EDF statement.

EDF said the three reactors were taken offline on Monday, while output at a fourth reactor was cut by half, leaving just one operating at full capacity. A sixth reactor was already offline for scheduled maintenance.

EDF added that the situation has no impact on the safety of the facilities, safety of personnel, or the environment.

SCMP Economy noted France has also faced nuclear disruptions this year from heatwaves and drought, with EDF shutting down several reactors in June and July due to extreme heat, and reported that France recorded a 15.6 percent shortfall in nuclear power production based on AFP calculations using EDF data.
