Nvidia and SpaceX partner on AI compute payload for Starmind satellite
SpaceX and Nvidia plan a long-term path that could scale to as many as 1 million AI satellites, with Nvidia saying its Vera Rubin platform delivers up to 25 times the AI performance of its H100 chips in orbit.
Nvidia has expanded its push into space-based computing through a new partnership with SpaceX to design the compute payload for the Starmind AI1 satellite, aimed at running heavy AI workloads in orbit, according to Yahoo Finance.
SpaceX laid out a longer-term vision in which it could scale the concept to as many as 1 million AI satellites that would effectively operate as a single, planet-circling data center, creating a potential orbital computing market opportunity.
Yahoo Finance also noted SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the company agreed to exclusively use Nvidia GPUs for the project, citing Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture.
Nvidia positions the underlying hardware as its Vera Rubin platform, which the company says delivers up to 25 times the AI performance of its H100 chips in orbit, while Futurum Research estimates orbital computing could reach a $1 trillion market by 2030, driven by falling Starship launch costs and constraints on power and cooling for terrestrial data centers.
