Oil gains push Treasury yields higher, weighing on major US indexes

WTI crude is up more than 2% and the 10-year Treasury yield rose about 3 basis points to 4.68%.

US stock indexes were broadly lower, with the S&P 500 down 0.04%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.14%, and the Nasdaq 100 down 0.15% on the day, according to Yahoo Finance. September E-mini S&P futures were also modestly lower, while September E-mini Nasdaq futures declined more.

Higher crude oil prices are pressuring equities by lifting inflation expectations and pushing up Treasury yields. WTI crude rose more than 2% and the 10-year Treasury yield increased about 3 basis points to 4.68%, the report said.

The losses were partially offset by strength in energy stocks and cybersecurity companies, alongside optimism about AI spending. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported that its July sales rose 45% year over year, which was cited as a sign of ongoing demand for AI hardware.

On the earnings outlook, Yahoo Finance said JPMorgan Chase raised its year-end S&P 500 projection to 8,000 from 7,800, pointing to a strong earnings season and faster AI monetization. The report also cited Bloomberg Intelligence data showing S&P 500 earnings growth nearly 32% in Q2, and Bloomberg data that 85% of 444 S&P 500 companies that had reported Q2 results beat estimates.
