SAT backlog rises to six-year high as disposals slow

Cases pending before India’s Securities Appellate Tribunal reached 1,066 in fiscal year 2026, while appeals dismissed fell to 135 in the same period.

India’s Securities Appellate Tribunal has seen its case backlog climb to a six-year high, even as fresh securities appeals slowed, according to annual reports cited by LiveMint.

Cases pending before SAT rose to 1,066 in fiscal year 2026 (FY26), up 11% from the prior year and 122.5% higher than the 479 cases pending in FY20, the outlet reported. Fresh appeals fell to 429 in FY26 from 533 in FY25, the data show.

LiveMint also pointed to slower disposals: appeals dismissed dropped to 135 in FY26, less than half the number dismissed in FY25. The divergence suggests pendency is being driven more by carryover from earlier years than by the latest stream of filings.

Lawyers quoted by LiveMint said most of the backlog pertains to cases carried over from earlier periods and that some matters have rolled over across multiple years. The report also referenced a past example involving Bombay Dyeing & Manufacturing Company Ltd, where SAT set aside penalties in January 2026 that Sebi had imposed four years earlier.
