Shanghai Cooperation Organisation faces limits on global influence

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which includes China and other Eurasian states, has a large geographic and economic footprint, but its ability to act as a major influence in global affairs is still limited, according to analysis in the SCMP Economy.

The outlet notes that the bloc represents nearly half of the world’s population, accounts for about a quarter of global GDP, and covers more than 60 percent of the Eurasian land mass, even as its international impact has not matched its scale.

SCMP Economy says the SCO has been a long-running priority within China’s neighborhood diplomacy, but its role in the wider international arena remains relatively restrained.
