UK law change leaves some foreign med graduates in limbo

SCMP Economy reports that some international students who enrolled in Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, or NUMed Malaysia, say they are left uncertain about how to enter the UK health training pathway after a UK rule change.

According to the outlet, the pathway was not formally guaranteed, but students were told about a decade-long record of applicants securing supervised training posts through the UK Foundation Programme.

The report adds that for international students, the UK route was financially and practically important because alternatives are limited. It says Malaysian NUMed graduates can pursue local housemanship, while NUMed says international graduates are not eligible for a pre registration internship required to practise medicine in Malaysia.

SCMP Economy also notes that a Medical Training prioritisation law became effective in March, prioritising UKFP places for medical graduates who completed most of their training in Britain. The article says one student spent about US$134,500 on an MBBS degree as they sought that UK pathway.
