US urges Southeast Asia to back denial defense strategy

Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby said the initiative aims to build an operational, resilient denial defense architecture across the Indo-Pacific.

Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby urged Southeast Asian partners to adopt a “flexible realism” approach in the Indo-Pacific, emphasizing practical defense cooperation and deterrence over ideology, the SCMP Economy reported.

Speaking at a Manila forum on Monday, Colby said the United States interests in the region are “more engaged than ever” and that Washington is looking for partners rather than protectorates.

Colby outlined a goal of building a fully operational, resilient architecture of denial defense stretching along the first island chain and across the wider Indo-Pacific.

SCMP Economy said Colby described the effort as in America’s interest to secure its own future, adding that Asia is a critical region, and noted it will be advanced during his first official trip to Asia that includes Jakarta, Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
