AI data center power swings are causing equipment failures sooner
The rapid load changes can force batteries, generators, and cooling systems to wear out faster, raising the risk of reliability issues and higher operating costs for data-center developers.
AI data centers are experiencing reliability problems as rapid swings in power demand strain critical backup and cooling equipment, Insurance Journal reports. The outlet says batteries, generators, and cooling systems can malfunction or degrade far sooner than expected, and that even short periods of lost uptime can hit developers' revenue.
Insurance Journal links the issue to the way AI workloads differ from older data-center patterns, with large power increments appearing and disappearing within seconds. Uptime Institute principal consultant Amber Villegas-Williamson compared the effect to over-revving an engine, arguing that unusually volatile demand wears equipment faster than steady operation.
The article also highlights broader grid stress, noting that power grids are already strained. Founder and president Shannon Miller of Mainspring Energy said an AI-related gigawatt-scale facility can be equivalent to a city the size of Boston, with parts capable of flickering on and off every few seconds.
Insurance Journal further describes how training new AI models can push power supplies hardest, because many GPUs mobilize together in millisecond cycles. The outlet cites Drew Baglino, a former Tesla executive behind He, saying AI can spike power use up to 50% above design capacity for brief moments, such as a 1 gigawatt site using 1.5 gigawatts for a split second.
