AI-linked data centre insurance market set to top $24bn by 2030

Allianz Commercial expects the market to rise from about $11bn to more than $24bn by 2030, driven by higher insured values and a broader mix of cover, including cyber and business interruption.

The global data centre insurance market is forecast to more than double to over $24 billion by 2030 as AI infrastructure expands, Allianz Commercial said. The commercial insurance arm of Allianz Group estimates the market will grow from around $11 billion currently to more than $24 billion by 2030.

Allianz Commercial linked the growth to rising insured values, expanding data centre capacity, and increasingly complex operational risks. It said construction costs for individual AI campuses can exceed $20 billion, and insured values can rise further after high-performance computing equipment is installed.

The insurer said demand is widening beyond traditional property insurance to include coverage for construction and engineering, business interruption, cyber, and liability. Allianz Commercial also pointed to insurer opportunities tied to energy resilience, operational continuity, and technology risk.

Allianz Commercial added that the changing scale of data centres is increasing loss severity, citing claims analysis in which fire accounted for well over half of roughly EUR 700 million (about $800 million) in losses examined. It said natural catastrophe events came next, followed by willful acts such as crime and cyber incidents, and it found water damage was the most common cause of claims in the data, with business interruption the largest contributor to claims severity.
