Behring to convert Oakland building into 20-megawatt AI data center
The 83,000-square-foot property at 415 20th St. is being reworked for inference computing and additional power upgrades after past university use.
Behring Cos. plans to convert a four-story, 83,000-square-foot property at 415 20th St. in downtown Oakland into a 20-megawatt artificial intelligence data center, according to Bisnow.
The building previously operated as a supercomputer facility for the University of California, Berkeley, starting in 2000, before the university moved its computing infrastructure in 2015 and its legacy data archives in 2019. Behring bought the site in December as part of a broader effort to build an AI hub in the East Bay.
Bisnow reports that the company is using the site for inference computing, a use case where AI programs analyze new data to make suggestions or decisions rather than rely only on their training data. The property received seismic retrofits and electrical upgrades during its earlier renovation for Berkeley Lab, and Behring is now performing additional work to increase the building’s power capabilities.
Bisnow added that more than a dozen prospective AI and robotics tenants have already toured the site, and Behring plans to create a ground-floor showcase, including talks with a robotics company to fill space with a showroom. The outlet also notes that Bay Area research suggests robotics and AI firms are slated to lease more than 1.5 million square feet in 2026, while less than 10 percent of the region’s industrial buildings can handle the high power loads often required.
