Bitcoin edges near $64,000 as traders wait for U.S. CPI
Harmony confirmed an exploit that minted about 4 billion ONE tokens, sending the token down as much as 40% to a record low even as broader crypto markets stayed steady ahead of the July CPI release.
CoinDesk said bitcoin was little changed ahead of the July U.S. CPI print, trading around $63,979 and up about 0.2% since midnight UTC.
The outlet pointed to a broader risk backdrop with oil prices near $90 a barrel, citing fresh Houthi attacks on shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and a U.S. strike on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman that add uncertainty to the inflation outlook.
CoinDesk reported that crypto volumes reflected a wait-and-see posture as traders absorbed a protocol incident and looked to macro data for direction. It said the Fear and Greed index stood at 38, while total crypto market capitalization held around $2.19 trillion.
It also highlighted that Harmony confirmed an exploit in which an attacker minted roughly 4 billion ONE tokens via empty blocks, about 26% of total supply, sending ONE to a record low and quickly funneling around 2.8 billion tokens to exchanges. CoinDesk added that implied volatility in bitcoin stayed subdued ahead of the CPI, with the 30-day implied volatility index around 37.5%.
