China pledges quake aid for Colombia after 7.4 temblor
China said it had not reported any Chinese nationals killed or injured and the embassy in Bogota is verifying safety in affected areas.
China said it will help Colombia recover from a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the country’s west on Monday, killing more than 200 people, according to SCMP Economy.
At a Beijing briefing, foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing would provide assistance in suitable ways based on what Colombia requests. He also said no Chinese nationals had been reported killed or injured and that the Chinese embassy in Bogota was working to verify the safety of Chinese citizens in affected areas, while advising people to guard against secondary hazards from aftershocks.
SCMP Economy reports President Xi Jinping sent condolences on Tuesday to Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, saying Colombia’s people would pull together to recover and rebuild soon. Separately, the China International Development Cooperation Agency said it is monitoring the disaster and will provide support in appropriate ways based on Colombian requests, with assistance described as within China’s capacity.
