Delta investigates unauthorized onboard Wi-Fi after DEFCON-linked incident
Delta said flight crews shut off the 757’s Wi-Fi for about 30 minutes, and it reported no access to Delta systems or impact to aircraft operating systems.
Delta Air Lines is investigating an unauthorized Wi-Fi network activation on a Monday flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta, following DEFCON, a major cybersecurity conference held over the weekend in Nevada, Insurance Journal reports.
Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant said the airline is working with federal law enforcement officials and aviation regulators to examine how the network was activated “for a short time.” Flight crew deactivated the Boeing 757’s Wi-Fi for about 30 minutes, and Delta said there was no hack of any Delta system.
Delta also said safety of flight was never in question, air traffic control did not declare an emergency, and no aircraft operating systems were affected. The airline said it is conducting a full investigation to gather facts, which will take time.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Atlanta office is aware of, or reporting, a “potential Wi-Fi-related incident” and is in contact with local and corporate partners, the outlet adds. Other agencies contacted for comment, including the Atlanta Police Department, TSA, the FAA, and DEFCON, did not immediately respond.
