Drone attack hits power plant at Libya’s Zawiya oil export terminal

A drone attack hit a power station at Libya’s Zawiya oil export terminal, signaling continued pressure on one of the country’s main oil hubs, according to OilPrice citing reporting from the AP.

The power plant sits near Libya’s largest refinery, and the attack followed earlier incidents in the area, including an explosion at an oil storage tank. OilPrice also reported that no party has claimed responsibility for the drone attacks.

OilPrice said the storage tank held 4.5 million liters of gasoline, and the destruction of the tank and fuel could make a local fuel shortage more severe. It also noted that if the power plant shuts down, refinery operations could be disrupted.

OilPrice added that the power plant attack was the fourth at the Zawiya terminal over the past few days, including a weekend drone crash into a naphtha tank at the Zawiya refinery that caused a leak that was contained.

OilPrice reported that the terminal has a daily capacity of 120,000 barrels sourced from the Sharara oil field, which can produce up to 300,000 barrels per day. It said Libya’s National Oil Corporation warned it might have to declare a force majeure, amid frequent targeting of oil infrastructure in disputes over political control.
