Hong Kong baby-food maker recalls products over suspected rice weevils

The company said the recall covers multiple “instant” items and is precautionary, with government tests not confirming any health risks.

Hong Kong baby-food producer Baby Basic has voluntarily recalled several products from store shelves after parents and online users raised concerns that the goods might contain rice weevils, according to SCMP Economy.

The recall covers “instant baby congee – konbu salmon” with an expiry date of June 22, 2027, as well as three varieties of the company’s “instant rice-shaped pasta”: salmon and cream, tomato and chicken, and vegetable and beef.

Baby Basic said the recall followed a report involving the vegetable and beef flavour of the instant rice-shaped pasta, which was suspected of containing the insects.

The company said refunds are available to customers who bought the affected products and added that government food-safety tests had not confirmed any health risks, describing the move as a precautionary measure to reassure parents.
