Ivans Index shows commercial insurance renewal rates eased in July
Renewal rates declined in five of six major US commercial lines in July, while workers' compensation was the only category to tick up but stay negative year over year.
Commercial insurance renewal rates cooled further in July, with average premiums falling month over month across five of six major US commercial lines, according to Ivans Index data released by Ivans, a division of Applied Systems.
Commercial auto renewal rates averaged 4.03% in July, down from 4.58% in June. Business owners policy renewals slipped to 5.94% from 5.97%, general liability fell to 4.99% from 5.33%, commercial property eased to 6.16% from 6.24%, and umbrella renewals declined to 7.42% from 7.60%.
Workers' compensation was the exception, posting a slight increase in July to negative 1.26%, up from negative 1.45% in June, but it remained the only line with a negative year-over-year renewal rate.
The July figures extend a softening pattern seen throughout 2026 in Ivans Index monthly and quarterly releases, and they align with other benchmarks cited by the outlet, including a May report from the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers showing average commercial premiums fell 1.2% in the first quarter of 2026. Ivans president of Applied Systems Carrier Michael Streit said renewal rates have continued to soften through the second quarter across most commercial lines.
