North Korea missile launch prompts South Korea, US and Japan tracking

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile was tracked from early stages and that authorities are still assessing its type.

North Korea’s recent missile launch, detected by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, is being closely monitored by South Korean, US and Japanese authorities, with observers saying it may be a test of upgraded weapons exports to Russia amid the war in Ukraine.

In the launch early Wednesday, the missile departed from the North’s southeastern port city of Wonsan and traveled about 700km (435 miles) eastward before landing in the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea’s military.

South Korea’s JCS did not specify the missile’s launch angle or whether it should be classified as short- or long-range, and a South Korean military official said further analysis is needed to determine its type.

The launch came six days after North Korea fired what South Korea identified as a short-range ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, with the JCS saying South Korea was maintaining capabilities and readiness under a robust South Korea-US combined defense posture.
