PLA to hold first joint naval drill with Indonesia near Taiwan

The exercise is scheduled for mid-August and will include communications and at-sea replenishment drills, with Taiwan protesting the plan.

Beijing announced the People’s Liberation Army will hold its first joint naval training with a foreign navy in waters east of Taiwan, with Indonesia, according to a statement from China’s defense ministry carried by SCMP Economy.

The drill is set for mid-August and is described as aimed at enhancing the two navies’ capabilities for joint operations, deepening practical cooperation, and supporting peace and stability in the region, the report said.

The planned training will involve the Chinese navy’s Type 054A frigate Honghe and the Indonesian Navy frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai, focusing on communications and at-sea replenishment, SCMP Economy reported.

Taiwanese authorities protested the exercise plan, labeling it a provocation, while the statement did not specify how far the drill will be from the Taiwanese coast and did not indicate combat operations, according to the outlet.
