Taiwan arrests mainland Chinese men after illegal inflatable boat landing
The arrests came after Taiwan’s Coast Guard reviewed coastal surveillance and maritime monitoring footage, following an inflatable boat find reported on July 24.
Hong Kong-based SCMP Economy reports that Taiwan has arrested two men from mainland China after an illegal landing by inflatable boat near Taipei, amid heightened coastal security concerns around the island’s largest annual military drill.
The case came to light after an angler reported finding an abandoned inflatable boat on July 24 at Bali Beach near the Port of Taipei, about 20 km from Taiwan’s political center. Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration said it launched an investigation after receiving the report, then reviewed coastal surveillance footage and maritime monitoring data.
SCMP Economy said the suspects arrived just before Taiwan’s 10-day Han Kuang exercise began on August 5 and were at large for nearly a week before being arrested on July 30 at a park in Taoyuan. The men were later transferred to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office, which ordered them detained incommunicado pending further investigation.
