TSMC and Sony to form $4.69 billion JV for next-gen image sensors

The venture will be headquartered in Kumamoto, with volume production targeted for 2029 and capital contributions planned in phases tied to market demand.

TSMC and Sony Group said they will create a joint venture worth $4.69 billion to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors in southern Japan. Volume production is expected to begin in 2029, and the partnership is set to be based in Kumamoto, where TSMC runs its Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) chip plant.

Sony will be the controlling shareholder and invest 465 billion yen, or $2.92 billion, through a mix of cash and asset transfers that include its newly built chip factory in Kumamoto prefecture. TSMC will invest 282 billion yen, the companies said in a joint statement.

The new entity, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, is intended to serve as a hub for development and production of image sensors for smartphones, using TSMC advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise. Sony is expected to lead core image sensor technology development and take charge of product planning and design.

The companies said their phased capital contributions will depend on market demand and other business conditions, and they are considering additional funding needs on the assumption that Japanese government support will be available. Reuters reported the details of the plan.
