Bitcoin and crypto firms ask AI labs for trusted access to defend networks
The open letter, organized by the Bitcoin Policy Institute, seeks frontier-model early access for qualified independent security researchers to help patch vulnerabilities before public release.
More than 40 bitcoin and crypto firms have signed an open letter urging major AI labs to create or expand “trusted-access” programs that would let qualified independent security researchers test frontier models before they are publicly released, according to Decrypt. The letter was organized by the Bitcoin Policy Institute, and signatories include Block and others.
The signers argue there is a security asymmetry in how model access works: core developers and defenders who patch wallets, node software, and related infrastructure often cannot reach the most powerful model programs. The firms say attackers can already access those capabilities, while defenders are left using open-weight systems that they can run themselves, which they describe as a step behind.
The letter also links its request to the scale of what is at stake, noting that the Bitcoin network secures more than $1.0 trillion and that the wider stack, including wallets, signing devices, and custody systems, holds trillions more. It says the code is open, so a single bug in the ecosystem can erase savings, but current model guardrails can shut down legitimate vulnerability hunting when developers try to use public models.
The letter comes after the Bitcoin Security Consortium, which includes firms such as BlackRock, Coinbase, and ARK Invest, committed $15 million to long-term Bitcoin network security late last month. Decrypt reports the AI labs involved have not issued a public stance on the specific trusted-access request, while some labs are working on safeguards intended to limit misuse of model capabilities.
