Hong Kong endures record hot spell, longest August streak
Hong Kong Observatory temperatures hit at least 33 degrees Celsius for nine straight days in August, and a high of 36.9 degrees on Sunday was the highest since records began in 1884.
Hong Kong residents have faced an unusually severe summer, with July rainfall coming in 23.0% above the monthly norm, followed by hot conditions in August linked to Tropical Cyclone Dolphin’s influence, according to SCMP Economy.
As of Thursday, the Hong Kong Observatory recorded maximum temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius or higher for nine consecutive days, marking the longest streak of very hot days for August.
Outdoor workers are feeling the impact most, driving debate over whether current heat stress warning signals are adequate for people including construction workers and street cleaners, as well as indoor workers with limited ventilation.
SCMP Economy reports that on Sunday the Observatory recorded a maximum of 36.9 degrees Celsius in Tsim Sha Tsui, the highest since the forecaster began keeping records in 1884.
