Hong Kong runs first drill at revamped Huanggang border crossing

The drill mobilised about 1,000 civil servants across more than 20 departments and included more than 120 departure movements to simulate passenger and vehicle flows.

Hong Kong conducted its first large-scale drill at the revamped Huanggang border crossing, with authorities describing traffic flows at the facility as smooth. The exercise took place on Thursday and drew on the involvement of about 1,000 civil servants from more than 20 departments, who were instructed to travel to the Hong Kong port area of Huanggang Port by public transport.

According to SCMP Economy, participants entered the port building and exited by similar means, as officials assessed the management of passenger and vehicular flows, passageway capacity, on-site guidance arrangements, traffic control, and supporting measures at the port building and its public transport interchange.

Authorities said the drill identified some issues as well as successes. Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung said the process was largely smooth and controllable, but some participants noted that signs were not clear enough and that queuing flow could be improved.

Transport minister Mable Chan said the management of passengers boarding, alighting, and queuing operated smoothly during the drill, which also involved more than 120 departures to simulate movements of people and vehicles arriving at and leaving the port.
