Bartlett Grain opens 2.4 million-bushel export facility in Illinois
The new plant is designed to handle up to 60,000 bph by rail and 20,000 bph by truck, with corn as the main grain and soybeans possible.
Bartlett Grain Co. is celebrating the grand opening of a new grain export facility in north central Illinois near Sheffield, built to support its export business, particularly shipments to Mexico, according to World Grain.
The company said the facility includes a 2.4 million-bushel storage capacity, high-speed load and unload systems, grain drying, and 110-railcar unit train capabilities. Construction began in March 2025, and the site is expected to be ready to receive grain ahead of the fall harvest, with operations tied to the Union Pacific Railroad for domestic and export logistics.
Bartlett said the plant draws from a roughly 100-mile radius and is located in a major corn producing region. World Grain added that the facility will handle mainly corn, with the possibility of soybeans, and includes three truck receiving pits with 20,000 bph capacity each, plus rail load capacity of 60,000 bph and a 10,000-bph GSI grain dryer.
The outlet reported that the facility is designed with expansion optionality, and that Bartlett expects it to create more than 25 permanent jobs. Bartlett also said the project supported more than $50 million of economic activity during construction, while Bureau County, Illinois, extended an enterprise zone that may make businesses eligible for state and local tax incentives and economic development benefits.
