Joby Aviation to buy Resonant Sciences for $500 million

The acquisition comes as Joby targets its first eVTOL flights in September 2026, with FAA certification in its fifth and final stage, and its stock fell 4.4% after the announcement.

Joby Aviation said it will acquire Ohio-based defense technology company Resonant Sciences for $500 million, signaling a push into defense alongside its electric air-taxi business, according to Yahoo Finance.

The deal strengthened the investment appeal of the defense sector, with the iShares US Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) up 17% this year, outpacing the S&P 500’s rise of about 13%, Yahoo Finance noted.

Despite that sector tailwind, Joby shares dropped 4.4% immediately after the acquisition news. Joby, founded in 2009, develops eVTOL aircraft for commercial service, with its S4 aircraft designed to carry one pilot and four passengers at about 200 miles per hour, targeting around 100 miles of range on a single charge.

Yahoo Finance also tied the stock reaction to the timing of Joby’s commercial operations, saying flights are still in testing and the company expects its first planes to take off in September 2026. The article added that Joby is in the fifth and final stage of FAA certification, with investors increasingly focused on when approval arrives.
