Kennedy Center board votes to add Trump name, proceed with closure
The plan faces a fresh legal test after a US judge ordered Trump letters removed and blocked an earlier closure set for July 5.
The Kennedy Center board has voted to add US President Donald Trump’s name to the performing arts venue’s facade and to move forward with a two-year closure, according to congresswoman Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member, and her lawyers, the Associated Press reports.
The developments set up another fight before US District Judge Christopher Cooper, who ruled in May that letters affixed to the building spelling out Trump’s name were added illegally, ordering them removed and blocking a closure that was set to start July 5. The judge said an earlier board vote endorsing the move was “ill-informed and seemingly preordained,” according to the report.
Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio, said in a statement that the latest step is intended to get around the court ruling and conflicts with statutes passed by Congress. The report also notes the Kennedy Center has become a widely visible example in the context of presidential power during Trump’s second term.
