Lower crude oil prices cut U.S. Canada energy trade value in 2025
Estimated U.S. energy imports from Canada fell to $111 billion in 2025, driving an overall 11% drop in the sector’s two-way trade value to $137 billion.
Lower crude oil prices weighed on the value of energy traded between the United States and Canada in 2025, according to EIA, citing U.S. Census Bureau data.
The total estimated value of U.S. and Canada energy imports and exports declined 11% in 2025 to $137 billion, the outlet said, noting that trade value moves with both commodity volumes and prices.
EIA said most of that total came from U.S. energy imports from Canada, which amounted to $111 billion in 2025, rather than exports.
The remainder of the U.S. Canada energy trade value reflected the other direction of flow, with EIA attributing the decline in total value to the lower crude oil price environment.
